Sometimes life is hard. But Sonia Rykiel's Spring/Summer 08 show made me feel girly and glad. And it was nice to feel that way. You know?

non-edgy details

um. Earlier this week Craig told me my blog wasn't edgy. And I seriously had a bit of an identity crisis. So let me just say, "I am a poser. I know in real life I like to convince you I'm dark and twisty, but apparently it's all a lie." Because I've been waiting for something edgy to blog about for days, and nothing came up. I wanted to say stuff like this:

• Happy first day of Spring!
• Look at this hilarious picture.
• This is my new favorite blog because everyday they post two sandwiches and I pretend to pick which one I want for lunch.
• Next week, two of Cary's friends are staying with Hilary and me, and we are SO excited. So excited, in fact, that we vacuumed. And we may or may not empty the garbage for the first time this semester. Second time ever.
  
• Last weekend we took care of #4. And actually, Craig (the boyfriend's friend) got to it like an hour before Cary (the boyfriend) did. It was a spin the bottle scenario. I guess that's pretty edgy...
  
• I cannot stop listening to RENT.
  
• A week ago, Whit and I did a photo shoot in Salt Lake. I felt like a freaking rockstar. Hopefully more on that later.
  

So there you have it. My non-edgy thoughts for the week. I will try to step it up.

Remember how I used to blog? It's been a while. I love having that "shared items" box (it's over on the right side), but since I put my favorite internet finds there, I don't feel the need to blog about them. I will blog about this photographer though. Her photographs make me like falling snow and I like that she titles her albums and photographs with quotes from people like Percy Shelley and Leo Tolstoy and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Bertrand Russell.

I like that this one is titled, "It was enough to sit there without words." I'm a very verbal person, but I like relationships that can be like this too.

Rodney Smith had a show at the BYU Museum of Art a few years ago. But I've been browsing through his portfolio this morning and I must say... I do love him. I am obsessed with every single one of these pictures.

I did a photoshoot with Nicole Hill this afternoon. It's awesome. And I am "crushed tomatoes." I brought my friend Kelly, and she is the pancake batter right after me. Awesome.

more details than you realize

I am so exctied to have this book on my dresser! A few weeks ago, Whitney emailed me about a post on black*eiffel (a blog we both know and love) about a photography book on libraries. As soon as I saw it, I wanted the book but didn't want to pay freaking £50 for. Fortunately I have access to one of the best libraries in the United States, and I promptly dropped everything I was doing to go check it out. But that Saturday night, the library was closed. So I went the next Monday morning and looked for it, but it wasn't there. I talked to the Humanities Reference desk and they couldn't find it either. They told me to check back in a couple days to see if it resurfaced. But it didn't. The next time I returned they told me I could use interlibrary loan, but when I did that, I got an email a few days later telling me I couldn't use interlibrary loan because our library "already has this book." Finally, I had to do a trace. The Informations Commons people filed all the information and told me they would email me if they ever found it - but it would probably take a couple weeks. But yesterday, I got an email telling me they had found it! So I rushed up to the Circulation Desk, they told me to go to the General Information desk, they told me to go to the 5th floor Humanities Reference desk, and the 5th floor Humanities Reference desk was closed. So after a lot of effort on my part, I finally got the book this morning.

If any of you actually read that, I'm impressed. It's very dull, but serves to prove a point:

You know how sometimes you work really hard for something, and then when you actually get whatever it is you're working towards, you are disappointed? This book is nothing like that. This book is one of the most beatiful things in the world, and I am so glad I tried so hard to find it. It was totally worth it.

french photography details

I found Jacqueline Veissid a couple weeks ago. And I absolutely love the ways she can bring out certain colors. Her website is great but what I love even more is her blog.
I feel like all her images are genius - she doesn't update very often, but when she does it's great.

icy details

I saw these ice cube trays a couple months ago at Spoon Sisters. I thought they were funny, but Kotama Boubane saw a hidden potential that I wish I could have discovered first. She's taken cliche breakup lines and photographed them in ice. I hope none of you have ever used these phrases or had them used on you. But for those of you who have, you know that ice may actually be the perfect medium for communicating these messages. Anyway, in addition to being an absolutely brilliant concept, the composition and color schemes are gorgeous - very isolated and lonely. I especially love the pictures where she has created a scene for a breakup (in bed, at the restaurant, in a garden of dying plants, etc.). Very clever. Her chalkboard collection is also exceptional.

"The Art of Detail"

Last week, Whitney drew my attention to a San Fansisco artist whose philosophy emphasizes the details. He loves details as much as I do! Probably more because his livelyhood depends on them... He has some facinating images that I think you oughta check out.

capturing the details

I actually love starting new hobbies because it feels great to go from terrible to decent.  The work goes fast and it's easy to see improvements.  When you are learning to play hockey, at first you're just trying to stay on top of your skates; scoring is the furthest thought from your mind.  But after practicing for a while, you actually start shooting.  Anyway, as I try to take things to the next level - going from good to better to best - the changes are more subtle.  I think the main difference between mostly good and phenomenal is attention to detail.  I've been trying to improve my photography skills, I've taken classes, practiced a lot, and today, I looked at some award winning photographs hoping to pick up on some details.  Some great portraits and wedding shots at WPPI have helped broaden my perspective a lot.  If you have endless hours to look at some photos, check these out.
