Two true stories:

First, last week I wore the exact same outfit as my nearly-retired, male Antitrust professor - for the fourth time this semester.

Second, the week I broke my toe, one of the research attorneys at work stopped to chat about broken bones and emergency room visits. As he walked out of my office, he turned to me and said, “The worst part about this whole thing is... look what it has done to your hair."

Others might consider rebranding their look, taking bold strides towards not looking awful. But I'm just hitting my stride, people. And sweater vests will always be awesome and you know it.

Sometimes Chris is in a suit and Brittney is in muppet skin slippers + pajamas + a blazer. Sometimes (read: every single day) this is Brittney's go-to outfit. Sometimes Jess thinks that's funny and takes a picture. Sometimes the best way to start the new year is exactly the way you ended the last one.

I usually spend more time reflecting on the previous year:

making course corrections with my past mistakes in mind
(e.g. No More Swears in 2011).
but this December my thoughts were focused on the future,
and I have never been so pleased to welcome a new year,
so excited for what's ahead.

Even though the weather has been absolutely beautiful recently, I’ve taken to wearing long sleeved shirts and hanging out in the library. Before I start my homework, if I take a moment to literally roll up my sleeves it gets me focused and keeps me in the right frame of mind. I have more to do before Halloween than can actually be done. I ask you. In times like these, what’s a girl to do but roll up her sleeves and get to work.

Thank you for keeping me together this weekend – but I don’t miss you very much. Whenever I smiled or laughed I could feel you tugging at my skin, which actually made being happy less pleasant than usual. Anyway, after the doctor threw you away, he replaced you with a special tape that I have to wear every day until Thanksgiving. I also have to wear a hat whenever I go outside or the sun will tattoo the scars you left behind.

Dear Cary,

this is what I was wearing... I self-portaited this one because I feel like Whitney will want to know. I put my cell phone in a cup and then put the cup on top of my TV. It was a pathetic moment for photography and my personal dignity.

It almost goes without saying that today was the craziest day of my life - I feel that way every night. Anyway, today I had a few people working at a farmers' market in Clinton Square. I went to go check on their progress, and I decided to pick up a few pints of blueberries from an Amish vendor. As I was leaving, two girls walked up to me, asked if they could take my picture and ask me a few questions about style for a column in the Syracuse University fashion section of the newspaper. They asked "what is fashion," "where did I get this hoodie/that jacket/those jeans/those shoes," "what is style," "what is not style," and "what's my favorite trend right now." Now, it's not like this was the Sartorialist, and it's nothing have having an article in the Universe, but I still felt better about myself when it was over.

to the Fashion Gods-

Today I went to court (twice) and saw the coolest hearings ever; It was seriously like the movies. Taxi rides over to the court room, yelling women, crying children, condescending judges, and, of course, the completely overwhelmed intern. I had two people give me business cards, I had a dozen people ask who I was representing, I worked my way into the exclusive (attorneys only) law library, and then returned to work SO excited that people mistakenly thought I was something more than an intern. I'm not sure, but I think I have you to thank for that. This outfit was an experiment in professionalism, and I think we made it.

Sometimes life is hard. But Sonia Rykiel's Spring/Summer 08 show made me feel girly and glad. And it was nice to feel that way. You know?

Ever since I lived with my freshman roommate, Kat, I wanted to be one of those people who wore watches like they meant something. And now I have Josh in my life who has exceptionally good taste in watches (including, but not limited to, a Shrek watch that I'm pretty sure came from a cereal box) and I feel inspired to be better. You know.

I own one watch, a graduation present from my dad that I absolutely love, but I can't bring myself to change it from London time. So it really is just something I wear to remind myself I used to live there, as opposed to a device that serves an actual, practical, non-sentimental purpose.

So for my crazy GBP shopping spree, I'm going to start by buying one of these watches. Who am I kidding. I'm going to buy several of these watches. This ultra violet one first.

I only own one thing by kate spade: a 2009 day planner. But I feel like I am allowed to admire from a distance. I saw these mittens earlier this afternoon, and now I like these earrings.

These are the pictures I sent to Whitney... I told everybody else they had to see it in person, but it's been some time now, and I feel brave enough to post. Anway, I decided it was time to donate my hair again, so I called Bon Losee and asked if I could do that there. The woman asked if I wanted the appointment for that afternoon, and I thought, "Huh...why not..." These pictures were both taken the day of in the HLRC on one of the BEAUTIFUL iMacs. btw, I'm still trying to figure out how to style this - if you run across any styles that you think I could pull off, email me.

This morning on Omiru, I read this article that I wanted to share with you all.

The beauty of clothes is largely in the details, as they give garments that extra special touch.  A plain vanilla shirt, for instance, can be taken to a whole new level with special details like tiny pleating, shirring, or even something like topstitching.  So when you’re shopping budget lines, look for special detailing.  You’d be surprised how often you can find designer-type detailing on low priced lines.

I was born in the 1980s, and although I don't remember much, there are many details that I associate with that time period. These details must have been floating around in my subconscious this morning because today, as I was walking to my Flexibility class, I realized I had incorporated many details from the 1980's (maybe more of the early 90s) into my ensemble.

One day in January, when I realized I only had 15 hangers in my closet and 7 of them are perpetually empty, I had something of an identity crisis. I realized that I needed to find what my "style" is. Since I was essentially working with a blank slate, I had a lot of work to do. SO I decided I would experiment with my style. Everyone experiments in college (and at BYU, we don't experiment in the way typical students do, so this is a fantastic alternative). This is a much deeper question than, "What am I going to wear?" It's about who you are, where you live, what you do, where you see yourself in the future, what you think is important from your past, how you see yourself, how you want to be viewed by others, and so on. So while it might seem to be just a pair of jeans that you love, it's not. What you wear and the way you wear it, speaks volumes.
