Mr. Gaffigan,

every single time I watch this movie, I laugh so hard I cry. every time.
I’d like to say Happy Leap Day. Also: I will be having cake this weekend. And this cake is bringing people together.

dear accutane,

As soon as you were gone, I could tell. I tried to tell my Dad what it was like, but I couldn't find the right comparison. Like fog lifting, like waking up from a bad dream, like being lost and then finding home, like suddenly remembering the right answer on an exam... But I guess Dr. Seuss has the most accurate post-accutane description. "And what happened then? Well, in Who-ville they say that the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day! And the minute his heart didn't feel quite so tight, he whizzed with his load through the bright morning light, and he brought back the toys!"
Anyway, you left last Wednesday. And I think my heart grew three sizes. I just wish it had happened sooner.

Elder Holland,

it begins around 1:50
Today, between intervals of drug-induced sleep, I listened to a talk you gave in 2008. The MP3 I have doesn't include the closing song, but I like that too.

Thanks,
britt

Dear Nachoooooooooooooo:

Today really got me. "Got me" like a train wreck gets ya. But you took what would have otherwise been an inordinately long and somewhat overwhelming day and made it a day that at least included laughter. Twelve hours of motions for visitation, drafting orders and discovery, beginning an adoption case, and mostly blind Lexis research… made all the better by the sound of your voice.

real/imaginary details

Twice a week I have a Modern Politics class in the Student Athletic Building. This class is, perhaps, a bit misplaced as nothing could be less athletic than talking about modern political philosophers. Oh, except for for maybe doing deductive logic - which was another class I had in this building.

I always go to Modern Politics two hours early because, down the hall, there is a ballet class where a little man plays the piano for the ballerinas. Through the open door, I hear the piano and the shuffling ballet shoes, and it makes me so unspeakably happy. I spent four hours this week on a squishy couch outside their classroom, reading Kant, loving that I was a ballerina for Halloween, and wishing that I was a ballerina in real life.

wordless details

let yourself feel. from Esteban Diácono on Vimeo.

Amazing animation by Esteban Diacono, and how much do we absolutely adore the title, "Let Yourself Feel"? The music is by Olafur Arnalds. Obviously, the English major loves pretty words, and I have a soft spot for ingenious lyrics, but 9 out of my top 25 most played on iTunes are instrumental songs:

  • Theme from Schindler's List - John Williams
  • Stella's Theme - William Joseph
  • Remember - from You've Got Mail
  • The Secret Life of Daydreams - from Pride and Prejudice
  • Sabrina Remembers/La Vie en Rose - from Sabrina
  • Nocturne in C# Minor - Chopin
  • Grant Me an Interview- from Sense and Sensibility
  • Dawn - still Pride and Prejudice
  • Stars and Butterflies - also from Pride and Prejudice

wide-eyed, eager, wholesome, innocent details

I woke up with this song in my head yesterday morning.

and it just got worse from there.

My dad was Professor Hill in college. And I have watched this movie billions of times. I love Buddy Hackett, I love the charisma of Harold, I love the music, I love the lisp, and I love my dad singing that "Trouble" song, oh I could just go on forever.

dreamy details

For most of my life, I haven't admitted to the stuff I really wanted. Because after you admit to wanting it, and then you don't get it, it's all the more embarrassing. And other people find out about your inadequacies - as if it wasn't enough to know them yourself. Well I've had enough of that. I'm trying to let myself be vulnerable and comfortable at the same time. So I'm going to say it: my dream law school is Columbia. I want to live in NYC. I want to go to a top 10 school. I want to be in their singles ward. I want to go there so freaking bad.

And on a similar thread, after seeing Paris, Je t'aime I am SO excited for New York, I love you.

painful details

Hilary and I watched this at about 2:00 last night. I tried to embed it, but who's to say if it will work or not. If not, go look at Charlie.
