A while ago, I bought a bag of plums from Costco. I finished it today. For every one of those little plums I thought, "They taste good to her."
To a Poor Old Woman
by William Carlos Williams

munching a plum on
the street a paper bag
of them in her hand
They taste good to her
They taste good
to her. They taste
good to her
You can see it by
the way she gives herself
to the one half
sucked out in her hand
Comforted
a solace of ripe plums
seeming to fill the air
They taste good to her.
this is quite possibly my favorite poem of all time.
ReplyDeleteanother good one about plums (also by William Carlos Williams):
This is Just to Say
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
In the seventh grade, I included that poem in an anthology that we had to do for class. my dad has that poem memorized, so over the years it has absolutely become one of my favorites. I'm glad we have this poem in common. :)
ReplyDeletealso, I LOVE William Carlos Williams. really. I feel like we should talk about this.
it's a deal. I adore William Carlos Williams' visual imagery. let's have a poem party someday.
